About our students:
Our students are hard workers with great work ethic. This race is put on by the Weed High School Advanced English Class, which includes about twenty freshman and sophomores. The Weed Elementary School is also very involved with collaborating with us for new ideas. They will also be a great help on race day. Our teacher, Mr. Dan Deross, came to our class with a amazing idea of putting on a running event to support our school. Ever since, we have been working hard to meet deadlines, find courses, and plan every other detail that is needed to put on this event.
History of our Town:
The town of Weed gets its name from the founder of the local lumber mill and pioneer Abner Weed, who discovered that the area's strong winds were helpful in drying lumber. In 1897, Abner Weed bought the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill and 280 acres of land in what is now the City of Weed, for the sum of $400. By the 1940s Weed boasted the world's largest sawmill. Today the Mill is still a big part of our economy and provides a lot of jobs to our community. Our little lumber town had grown in size to a population of about 3,000. We hope you enjoy our small historic town.
